Last night me and a friend decided to watch the movie A Tale of Two Sisters, a film that was remade by British directors Thomas Gaurd and Charles Guard. (I also wrote up a 3 Act Structure for said movie and it can be found HERE.) It's one of my favourite horror/thriller flicks so to watch the original Korean film was a must! A Tale of Two Sisters was directed and also written by Korean, Jee-woon Kim.
(Director and writer, Jee-woon Kim.)
In the opening weekend it earned $94,923 (Hong Kong) (22 August 2003). It's production companies include B.O.M Film Productions Co. and Masulpiri Films. One name in particular that occurred often in the distributors section was Tartan both UK and USA with multiple inputs to the distributing of this film.
The total running time of the movie is 115 minutes.
At first I was a little skeptical of the movie as I don't tend to watch Korean horrors, strangely as I'm a huge fan of the Korean/Japanese scene. But I gave it a chance as I've been told that the Asian horror flicks are some of the most scariest to be made and boy, was they right.
The film starts with a young girl named Su-Mi in a mental institution being interviewed by a doctor. She is suffering from shock and psychosis. She is asked by the doctor if she can speak about her family and the day she was admitted to the hospital. This then follows with the next scene fading into her arrival home with her father.
Upon watching this scene I noticed immediately it's similarities to the British/American version of the film, The Untold and this had me intrigued already.
(Sisters Su-Mi and Su-Yeon.)
The movie goes on to reveal lots of disturbing events between Su-Mi, Su-Yeon and the step mother. Their father, oblivious to the events occurring in the house. Throughout the movie I found myself constantly surprised even though I had watched a very similar movie before, it didn't fail to make me jump and to question things happening. Over all this movie is a thrilling, mind-boggling watch and I recommend anyone who enjoys mysterious, psychological horrors to watch this.
